Schloss Kyburg
Perched on a rock, 150 meters above the winding river Töss, Kyburg Castle (Schloss Kyburg) has been standing for around 1000 years. The circular tour takes the visitor through more than 30 rooms: from the great hall, past the dungeons, up to the watchtower, then down to the court room, on to the gunpowder chamber and down to the cellars. 307 steps to climb! The Earl’s house and tower demonstrate the national importance of this historical monument. Architectural history may be studied in great detail. The Burgmuseum (castle museum) in the Ritterhaus (knight’s house) has been devoted to past rulers and monarchs. Late Gothic murals in the chapel, knights’ helmets waiting to be tried on, halberds in the armoury, historical lifting tongs to try out, audio stations, short animated films, kitchen garden, paintings and metal prints: Kyburg Castle has got something for everyone.
