Schloss Hegi

Hegi Castle (Schloss Hegi) is located on the outskirts of Winterthur, near the former village of Hegi and houses an historical museum in its late medieval chambers. The central castle tower may have been built around 1200 by the Lords of Hegi. Hegi had its heyday around 1500 ruled then by the lords of Hohenlandenberg, who constructed further buildings with remarkable interiors. The richly decorated tower room and the castle’s chapel remind the visitor of the most important owner, Bishop Hugo von Hohenlandenberg of Constance. From 1587 Hegi served as the seat of the highest church bailiff of Zurich before it changed hands and became private property in the 19th century. In 1915 the history professor Friedrich Hegi bought the run-down estate, renovated it, and established a museum. The castle association formed in 2010 is now responsible for the complex and looks after the museum and the Pro-Specie-Rara garden as well as the castle’s tavern. It also organizes events such as theatrical performances and concerts.
